The case of the square inside the circle

Eruvin 76 presents the geometry of a square inside a circle. The math seems badly wrong at the commentators’ first glance, leading to lots and lots of interpretation.

The Mishnah on Eruvin 76a says that for a window to possibly bridge two courtyards, it needs to be at least 4 by 4 tefahim and within 10 tefahim of the ground.

The Gemara then gives us the ruling of Rabbi Yohanan about a circular window:

Rabbi Yohanan said: A circular window needs 24 tefahim in its circumference. And two plus a bit from those need to be within ten [tefahim from the ground], so that if you make a square, some of it will be within ten.

This is difficult to understand.

Eruvei hatserot

Chapters 6 through 8 of Eruvin mainly discuss the details of eruvei hatserot, the joining of courtyards.

Mide-orayta, a courtyard is a private domain, so there is no Torah prohibition to carry between a courtyard and its houses. But there is a rabbinic prohibition to carry into the courtyard unless all members of the courtyard joining an eruv. (Eruv, according to Wyatt Cenac, is the Hebrew word for “loophole.”)

The Gemara on Eruvin 21b attributes this law to King Solomon, with approval from Heaven:

Rashi there explains that the decree protects the Biblical law of hotza'ah:

The Rambam, Hilkhot Eruvin 1:4, explains similarly:

Aharonim discuss a possible nafka minah between the explanations of Rashi and Rambam: does the gezeirah include carrying between two houses without crossing through the hatser?

Zedekiah’s Cave

Today was one of those Daf Yomi coincidence days.

Last night I made plans to go to Zedekiah's Cave today, near Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. It's pretty cool. Literally cool, actually – it's a nice temperature down there out of the sun. The inside of the cave has an area of about two football fields ("football" still means "American football" to this oleh hadash) and averages the height of a four-story building. Who knew that such a huge, quiet space exists down there under the Arab markets?

So that's one thing I did today on Jerusalem Day. And guess what? By total coincidence, the cave is also mentioned on today's daf, Eruvin 61b!

The cycle of the sun

Eruvin 56a includes some ideas about astronomy:

We've mentioned before how we can't resist commenting when the Gemara raises astronomy.

Are tehumin de-orayta?

The third through fifth chapters of Massekhet Eruvin discuss the laws of eruvei tehumin, "merging of boundaries." On Shabbat you may not leave your tehum, or boundary, defined by your location at the onset of Shabbat or by a designated eruv. You get your full domain, such as your city, plus two thousand amot beyond your domain.

Is the prohibition of leaving your tehum biblical or rabbinic?

The Mishnah in Sotah on 27b presents a mahloket tanna'im:

Rabbi Akiva gives Numbers 35:5 as a biblical source for a tehum Shabbat of two thousand amot. It happens to be a pasuk dear to ba'alei keri'ah for its karnei parah. Thanks to this mishnah, the concept of biblical tehumin is referred to throughout the Bavli as tehumin aliba de-Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Eliezer son of Rabbi Yosei ha-Galili reads the verse differently, and the Gemara on 30b explains the dispute as based on whether tehumin are de-orayta or de-rabbanan.

There other tanna'im quoted in the Bavli who say that tehumin are de-orayta, such as Rabbi Hiyya on Eruvin 17b and Rabbi Meir on Eruvin 35b.

How widespread is this view in the Gemara? We have a mahloket rishonim.

Work before Havdalah

The Gemara on Shabbat 150b establishes that one may not do work on Saturday night before Havdalah.

But there is more than one Havdalah: Havdalah in Shemonah Esrei and and Havdalah over wine. Which one are we talking about?

Rabbi Natan bar Ami, from 4th-century Mehoza, says that no work is allowed until you say Havdalah over a cup of wine. He therefore he establishes that wine was available in the Saturday night situation described in the Mishnah. But Rabbi Abba, from 5th-century Israel, says that the custom there was to simply verbalize ha-mavdil bein kodesh le-hol and then begin doing work.

No clapping on Shabbat?

Today's Daf Yomi forbids clapping on Shabbat and Yom Tov. Shabbat 148b quotes a mishnah from Beitsah 36b:

It's a straightforward mishnah brought down straightforwardly by the Shulhan Arukh, OH 339:4. No clapping.

But of course, many of us do clap. Many authorities came to acknowledge this over history, starting with this Gemara, and continuing through the rishonim and aharonim.

Rabbi Ari Enkin already goes through the sources on this topic, so I don't have to go through them all here. But some are worth seeing inside.

What is honey?

The Mishnah on Shabbat 143b presents a dispute about crushing honeycomb on Shabbat:

The Gemara on 145b (and in a similar discussion on 19b) notes that Rabbi Eliezer and the Sages have the same dispute as for olives and grapes, and explains why we might have thought that honeycomb should be more lenient.

Honey from a honeycomb “starts as food and ends as food,” whereas squeezing olives or grapes gets you a liquid.

Lemonade on Shabbat

Shabbat 143b through 145a addresses sehitah, the prohibition against squeezing on Shabbat. This came up on this blog once before.

The posekim debate how this prohibition relates to making lemonade. At first glance, you might think that making lemonade is a straightforward example of squeezing. But God forbid that lemonade should be asur on Shabbat!

First, here are the basics that most rishonim learn from the give-and-take on these pages of Gemara. (It happens to be a relatively challenging give-and-take to follow, which is kind of unfair to Daf Yomi learners on Purim weekend.) There are three type of fruit: grapes and olives, which may not be squeezed mide-orayta; "tutim ve-rimonim," fruits which are commonly squeezed for juice, and may not be squeezed mide-rabbanan; and other fruits, which may be squeezed lekha-tehillah. That's most rishonim, including the Rif, Rambam, Semag and Rosh. and most Rashi, Tosafot, and the Semak are mahmir with that last one, and only allow squeezing a fruit if you do so to sweeten the fruit.

Filtering on Shabbat

The Mishnah on Shabbat 139b discusses filtering water or wine on Shabbat, which is potentially a problem of borer:

Filtering is permitted, but in specific cases. The Gemara clarifies the details:

Ze'iri explains that only clear water and wine may be filtered, not cloudy water or wine. When challenged with a source that seems to allow cloudy wine, he explains that it refers to wine at the winepress.

Brit milah math

The Mishnah on Shabbat 137a discusses a mohel who mistakenly circumcised a baby on Shabbat when the baby was either seven or nine days old:

The Gemara then presents different versions of this mahloket tanna'im, changing which cases are agreed as hayyav, agreed as patur, or disagreed.

The three Shabbat meals

Shabbat 117b describes the obligation to eat three meals on Shabbat, based on Exodus 16:25, which we just read in shul a couple days ago:

It goes on for the next few pages to describe the importance of these meals, and of enjoying Shabbat in general.

Some highlights:

What is the nature of this obligation? What are its requirements?

Nisht Shabbos geredt...

Today, Daf Yomi discusses appropriate conversation on Shabbat. The Gemara on 113a–b interprets the following verses from the end of Isaiah 58:

(13) If you restrain your foot on the Shabbat, and from doing business on My holy day; and you call the Shabbat a delight, and God's holy day honored; and you honor it from doing your own ways, seeking business, and speaking about things; (14) then you will feel delight in God, and I will have you ride upon the high places of the world, and I will feed you the portion of Jacob your father; for the mouth of God has spoken.

The Gemara learns something from each phrase in the second half of verse 13, including that “your speech on Shabbat should not be like your speech during the week.”

The sefek sefek sefeika in your shoelaces

The Gemara on 113a understands that there is a mahloket tanna'im about tying a bow on Shabbat. The Sages permit it and Rabbi Yehudah prohibits it:

The obvious practical implication, as promised: can you tie your shoes on Shabbat?

Tying knots on Shabbat

Daf Yomi now begins the fifteenth perek of Shabbat, which starts by dealing with knots. Tying and untying knots are two of the thirty-nine melakhot.

Two mishnayot on 111b discuss the knots that are prohibited by the Torah and by the rabbis:

Vitamins on Shabbat

Sorry for the long break in posting. Things got hot for a while at my other blog.

Daf Yomi is now dealing with medical treatments on Shabbat. The Mishnah on 109b gives a general principle:

The relevant part in English:

One may eat any food for healing purposes, or drink any liquid, except for palm tree water and root drink, which are for jaundice. But one may drink palm tree water for thirst, or apply root oil for purposes other than healing.

In other words, foods that are normally eaten by healthy people are exempt from the rabbinic decree against medicine on Shabbat, even when they eat those foods specifically for medicinal benefits. Foods that are normally eaten only for medicinal benefit may also be eaten by healthy people, but only if they don't specifically want the medicinal benefit.

A practical case today would be vitamins, which healthy people eat, but only for the health benefits.

How does this law view vitamins? Are they medicine? If so, are they prohibited to healthy people?

“Then let God compare it to nevelah!”

Since my last post, Daf Yomi has moved on to kil’ayim, poletet shikhvat zera, mattan Torah, back to shi’urim for hotsa’ah, and now has begun Perek ha-Matsnia on 90b. But this blog is still stuck on the objection of the Gemara on 82b,

This seems like an important point for the Talmud Bavli’s view of Torah she-ba’al peh, so I’m going giving it at least one more post.

The background is that Rabbi Akiva and the Sages disagree on whether the impurity of an idol works like that of a niddah or like that of a sherets. Each quotes a biblical verse for support. The rishonim understand the impurity of idols to be a rabbinic decree, so those verses are really asmakhtot, not sources. But then Rabbah qualifies the Sages’ opinion so that the impurity of idols is more like that of a nevelah than a sherets. The Gemara objects, “Then let the Merciful One [in the Torah] compare [the impurity of idols] to nevelah!”

Why does the Gemara expect the Torah to match a much later rabbinic decree?
