What is honey?

The Mishnah on Shabbat 143b presents a dispute about crushing honeycomb on Shabbat:

חלות דבש שריסקן מערב שבת ויצאו מעצמן - אסורין, ורבי אליעזר מתיר.

The Gemara on 145b (and in a similar discussion on 19b) notes that Rabbi Eliezer and the Sages have the same dispute as for olives and grapes, and explains why we might have thought that honeycomb should be more lenient.

חלות דבש. כי אתא רב הושעיא מנהרדעא, אתא ואייתי מתניתא בידיה: זיתים וענבים שריסקן מערב שבת, ויצאו מעצמן - אסורין, ורבי אלעזר ורבי שמעון מתירין. אמר רב יוסף: גברא יתירא אתא לאשמעינן? אמר ליה אביי: טובא קא משמע לן, דאי ממתניתין - הוה אמינא: התם הוא - דמעיקרא אוכלא ולבסוף אוכלא, אבל הכא דמעיקרא אוכלא ולבסוף משקה - אימא לא, קא משמע לן.

Honey from a honeycomb “starts as food and ends as food,” whereas squeezing olives or grapes gets you a liquid.

The tum’ah of avodah zarah

Shabbat 82a–83b discusses the rabbinically instituted tum’ah of avodah zarah. The mishnah starting the ninth perek quotes the opinion of Rabbi Akiva, that the tum’ah is like that of a niddah:

משנה. אמר רבי עקיבא: מניין לעבודה זרה שמטמאה במשא כנדה - שנאמר +ישעיהו ל+ תזרם כמו דוה צא תאמר לו, מה נדה מטמאה במשא - אף עבודה זרה מטמאה במשא.

The Gemara then quotes a mishnah from Avodah Zarah 47a with Hakhamim who differ, and compare the tum’ah to that of a sherets:

תנן התם: מי שהיה ביתו סמוך לעבודה זרה ונפל - אסור לבנותו. כיצד יעשה - כונס לתוך שלו ארבע אמות ובונה. היה שלו ושל עבודה זרה - נידון מחצה על מחצה. אבניו ועציו ועפריו מטמאים כשרץ, שנאמר +דברים ז+ שקץ תשקצנו וגו’. רבי עקיבא אומר: כנדה, שנאמר +ישעיהו ל+ תזרם כמו דוה, מה נדה מטמאה במשא - אף עבודה זרה מטמאה במשא.

This is a summary of the laws of tum'ah, ritual impurity. They were practical mainly when the Temple stood, even though they are still in effect today. May they all be practical again soon!
