Making a keli unusable on Shabbat

The mishnah on Shabbat 42b states:

One may not place a keli under a lamp, on Shabbat, in order to catch the oil that may drip.

Rav Hisda says the principle also applies to a placing a keli under a hen to catch a newly hatched egg:

Rav Yosef explains Rav Hisda on 43a:

By causing a new egg, which is muktsah, to rest on the keli, you are mevattel keli me-heikhano, “nullifying the readiness of the keli.”

Abaye raises a number of cases against Rav Yosef that also involve bittul keli me-heikhano at first glance, including supporting a broken beam in the ceiling with a bench, placing a keli under a leaking roof, and using an overturned basket as a step for baby chicks to enter and exit their coop.

What is this prohibition of bittul keli me-heikhano?

There are two other discussions in Shabbat where the Gemara wants to prohibit something based on bittul keli me-heikhano. The second is Shabbat 128b:

If an animal falls into a channel of water, and it’s going to suffer there, you can drop pillows and blankets into the water so that the animal can climb out. Dropping those pillows is an issur de-rabbanan of bittul keli me-heikhano, but the issur de-orayta against animal suffering overrides the issur de-rabbanan.

The third discussion is on Shabbat 154b:

A donkey has a load that is muktsah, and we want to untie the load and so it falls on some pillows. In one case, where the load is full of a bloodletter’s pipettes, we worry that the pillows will be unusable because of the muktsah on top of them. In another case, the load is full of spoiled honey, and we worry that the pillows will become unusable by getting dirty.

The Otsar Iyyunim in Mesivta finds four different explanations among the rishonim for the decree against bittul keli me-heikhano.

1. Boneh

Rashi on Shabbat 42b explains that the problem with placing a keli under a lamp is that by causing it to be muktseh, you may as well have plastered it in place, which is boneh, construction:

So too explains the Me'iri:

The Me'iri adds an exception, that if the keli is always in this place, then the problem of boneh would not apply.

The Nimmukei Yosef and Rabbeinu Ovadyah mi-Bartenura also follow Rashi's explanation here.

2. Soter

Tosafot on 43a note that while Rashi explains bittul keli me-heikhano as an issue of boneh, on 154b (and also on 128b) Rashi explains the problem as soter, destroying the keli.

Rashi on 128b:

And Rashi on 154b:

So too the Rambam, Hilkhot Shabbat 25:23:

And the Or Zarua, Hilkhot Shabbat 79:

And also the Tur, O"H 310:

I note that the explanation of soter fits better with the language of bittul, and with the concept that the usefulness of the keli is lost.

3. Kevod Shabbat

The Ritva understands bittul keli me-heikhano as reducing the honor of Shabbat, kevod Shabbat. He writes on 43a:

He also writes on 128b that “there is no greater bittul keli me-heikhano than dirtying kelim that could be used on Shabbat”:

This fits with his view that the basis is kevod Shabbat. Only then would losing a keli to dirtiness be worse than losing it to muktsah.

4. You may come to move the keli

The Otsar Iyyunim cites the Tosafot R"Y ha-Zaken on 47b as interpreting bittul keli me-heikhano as a decree, that you may accidentally move the keli which you just made muktseh.

So that's four interpretations of bittul keli me-heikhano: boneh, soter, kevod Shabbat, and gezerah shema yetaltel.

The later rishonim and aharonim discuss myriad nafka minah’s among these different understandings of bittul keli me-heikhano. For example, the Penei Yehoshua notes that a keli that was meant to catch dripping oil would not fall under bittul keli me-heikhano if the reason is soter, but it would if the reason is boneh. The Otsar Iyyunim has about six others.
